You know Spanish. You just freeze when it's time to speak it.

Psychologically designed Spanish conversation practice that remembers you, adapts to you, and never once makes you feel judged for stumbling. Built for intermediate learners who know more than they can say.

Two people in conversation at home

Sound familiar?

This is exactly who Voco is built for.

You can already hold a basic conversation, you're just not fluent yet.

Finding time to actually practice speaking is the hard part.

Understanding a native speaker at full speed throws you off.

Replying quickly, without translating in your head first, feels impossible.

The psychology behind it

Designed to keep you in the flow of conversation

Every feature here is built on a psychological principle, not added for its own sake, each one designed to help you actually speak the language you already know.

Familiarity lowers the guard

The research

Robert Zajonc, 1968 — “Attitudinal Effects of Mere Exposure”

Repeated exposure to something, or someone, makes it feel safer and more likable, even when you're not consciously aware you've encountered it before. Zajonc showed this held across faces, words, and even nonsense shapes: familiarity itself lowers threat, before any reasoning kicks in.

How Voco uses it

A conversation partner who already knows about your trip to Madrid feels less like a stranger to perform in front of, and more like someone you're mid-conversation with. That's the guard coming down.

How did the flights work out for your trip to Madrid?

Remembered from session 4

It remembers what happened last time

Mention your partner's family, an upcoming trip, or a work deadline once, and Voco brings it back into future sessions, the way an actual person would, instead of starting cold every time you open the app.

Interest speeds up retrieval

The research

Suzanne Hidi, 1990 — “Interest and Its Contribution as a Mental Resource for Learning”

Material you're personally interested in gets more attention and gets processed more deeply while you're taking it in, which is exactly what makes it easier to pull back out later. Interest isn't just more pleasant, it changes how thoroughly the memory gets built in the first place.

How Voco uses it

A conversation about your actual weekend plans recruits vocabulary you'll want again. A generic textbook topic doesn't have that pull, so it doesn't stick the same way.

Asking for restaurant recommendations
Talking about your weekend plans
Ordering coffee

Every session starts with a topic built around you

Pick from suggestions built around your interests. The platform tracks what you've covered so each session goes somewhere new.

Support removes the freeze point

The research

John Sweller, 1988 — “Cognitive Load During Problem Solving”

Working memory can only hold so much at once. When part of it is spent hunting for a word mid-sentence, there's less left over for actually forming the thought you're trying to express. Cut the cost of the search, and more capacity is free for the conversation itself.

How Voco uses it

The freeze isn't usually about not knowing the language, it's the word search eating the exact mental bandwidth you needed to keep talking. A glance at the panel returns that bandwidth.

¿Qué me recomiendas? What do you recommend?
Se me hace agua la bocaMouth-watering

Useful phrases appear before you need them

A live panel updates with every AI turn, surfacing the most relevant phrases for your reply, with translations. Glance right, keep talking.

Matched challenge creates flow

The research

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, 1990 — “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience”

Deep, effortless focus, what Csikszentmihalyi called flow, shows up most reliably in the narrow band where a task's challenge closely matches your current skill. Drift below that band and you get boredom; drift above it and you get anxiety. Both knock you out of flow.

How Voco uses it

A fixed difficulty level drifts out of that band as you improve, which is exactly why static courses start to feel either too easy or too stressful. Adjusting every session keeps you inside it.

BeginnerIntermediateAdvanced

Adjusted after your last 3 sessions

It gets harder exactly as fast as you do

Speed, vocabulary, and complexity shift session to session based on how you're actually doing, not a level you picked once at signup. Too easy and you coast, too hard and you freeze, Voco keeps finding the edge of what you can handle.

Comparison against yourself only

The research

Leon Festinger, 1954 — “A Theory of Social Comparison Processes”

People naturally judge their own ability by comparing it to others, and later motivation research built on this found that comparisons framed against a peer group tend to undermine intrinsic motivation, especially for anyone who reads as behind. Feedback framed against your own past performance avoids that trap entirely, there's no one else's curve to lose to.

How Voco uses it

Your words-per-minute chart only ever races last month's you. There's no leaderboard position to protect, so a slower week reads as data, not a verdict.

Words per minute

86

vs your last 3 sessions, not other learners

Every stat is measured against your own last few sessions

No leaderboards, no streaks, no ranking against other learners. Words per minute, grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, all of it moves against your own rolling average, so one slower week never reads as falling behind someone else.

Not just practice. A path with a purpose.

Tell Voco why you're really learning, a move, a new job, a partner's family, and it builds a tailored learning path to get you there.

Built around your real reason

Say why you're learning and Voco writes the stages: the flat viewing, the first team meeting, the in-laws' dinner table.

Role-play, not theory

Each checkpoint drops you straight into the conversation, a landlord, an interviewer, so you rehearse it for real.

Progress you can see

Phrases and conversation time tracked live. Finish a checkpoint, watch the stage fill in, one conversation at a time.

James Hutchinson, founder of Voco

Who's behind Voco

Built by someone who's actually done it

Hi, I'm James. I'm a native English speaker who also speaks Spanish and Italian, and I've spent 13 years learning languages.

In 2013 I spent a year on Erasmus exchange in Castellón, Spain. I arrived unable to speak a word of Spanish. By immersing myself in the language for real conversations, not just study, I reached an intermediate level in 9 months.

That experience is where Voco comes from. I got obsessed with how our brains actually learn languages, and the psychology behind why so many people who "know" a language still freeze the moment they have to speak it. Voco is built to close that specific gap.

What people are saying

Real messages from people using Voco, exactly as they sent them.

Message from Cath O'Neill: OMG Carlos even knows that St Helens rugby have gone crap!! Which AI engine is this using?
Message from Stefano: One feature I particularly liked is the voice feedback you receive when you use certain expressions correctly. For example, the AI says, You said that well! I found this encouraging and useful because it makes the conversation feel more interactive.
Message from Norris Pedrito: I really enjoyed it, and found it very challenging which is just what I need
Message from Cath O'Neill: It's good that the platform has pitched it at the right level. This kind of conversation is so hard to strike up in real life so this is invaluable. UX is a good design too
Message from Patrick Yee: I love how i can choose the right persona for me and the speed at which he or she speaks. i love how there's vocab on the side too.
Message from Nancy B Rosedale: I just did another session and it went well. Cute touch with the emojis.

Questions people actually ask

Who will I be talking to?

An AI persona, not a real person, with their own name, personality and voice. Choose from a handful of personas for your language, from warm and curious to direct and energetic, and switch any time in your settings.

What level do I need to start?

Voco is built for intermediate learners, roughly A2 to B2: you can already hold a basic conversation, you're just not fluent yet. You pick your level when you sign up and the pace adapts from there.

Which languages can I practice?

Spanish, Italian, French, German and Portuguese, each with its own set of conversation partners and voices.

Does Voco correct me while I'm talking?

No. Corrections never happen mid-conversation, that's what kills the flow and the confidence to keep going. You get specific, positive feedback right after the session ends instead.

Does it ever switch to English?

Never, even if you get completely stuck, switching to English breaks your flow in the target language. Instead, you get assists like toggling translations on or off, or a suggestion appearing on screen in the moment, so the conversation stays in your target language the whole way through.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your conversations and data are private by default, only you can see them, and you can edit or delete anything, any time.

How much does it cost?

Your first 3 sessions are free, no card required. After that it is £20 a month for unlimited practice conversations, cancel any time. If you are working toward a specific date, a Learning Path is a separate one-off purchase from £200, backed by a completion guarantee.
